Weapons used in the Falklands title Home Page Contact Me
Nearly all of the weapons used in the Falklands conflict are not used any more, a few of them, the Seawolf and Tigerfish are still in use I believe, but things have moved on rapidly since 1982
The 4.5 inch twin barrel gun turret, as fitted on the older ships like the Yarmouth. These turrets had a crew of up to 4 people and were used for Naval gunfire support on port Stanley airfield and other targets. Relatively slow firing compared with the mark 8 single barrel, which could fire twice as many rounds per minute, and were fully automated. The mark 8 was fitted on the majority of warships in the Falklands.

Exocet missle

The ever so naughty Exocet surface to surface or air to surface missile. Used to devastating effect against the Sheffield, Glamorgan and Atlantic conveyor. We never got a chance to fire ours back because the Argentinean Navy refused to come to sea after the sinking of the Belgrano.

The triple barrel anti submarine mortor launcher, again fitted to the older ships. HMS Yarmouth used these to good effect when along with HMS Arrow they went to help HMS Sheffield after the exocet attack. The Arrow picked up an enemy submarine on her sonar (and got an excellent picture of the sub on her echo sounder) and the Yarmouth swung into action throwing mortors all over the place.

Seaskua missile

Seaskua, Helicoper launched air to surface missile.
A very handy piece of kit if you want to destroy all sorts of small boats

Oerlikon, 20mm anti aircraft machine gun. On the first day at the Falklands the Arrow ,Glamorgan and Avenger were carrying out Naval gunfire support on Stanley airfield when 4 Argentinean skyhawks were spotted coming over the land towards us. What confused everybody was when one of the skyhawks disappeared (believed to have been shot down by friendly fire), my mate Ian Britnal decided to take some photos at the same time the skyhawks decided to open fire. Ian was the first casualty of the Falklands war. Anyway my fellow killick radar operator (Whisky Walker) was manning the starboard 20mm at the time and was the only weapon to return fire from all three ships

Orlikon

Sidewinder missile

Sidewinder, When America shouts, the British come running, risking lives without a second thought, and backing them up to the hilt. This was Americas contribution to the Falklands war. Supplying Britain with a few sidewinders GEE THANKS!

The awesome Seaslug, surface to air missile fitted only to HMS Glamorgan and HMS Antrim (thanks to Kev Prout for reminding me about the Antrim) during the Falklands war.
This missile is the size of a large family saloon, and if nothing else would scare a pilot to death if he saw it approaching him.

Tigerfish torpedo

Tigerfish, wire guided torpedo.
I did trials on this fish when I was based at Kyle. Not considered reliable enough to sink the Belgrano so they used the much older Mk VIII torpedo, which as we know had the desired effect.

Save the best until last. Seawolf, totally superb close range point defence surface to air missile. Fully automatic just switch it on and watch it go. Responsible for 5 Argentinean aircraft, might not sound a lot, but it's bloody difficult to hit fast moving aircraft when your in rough seas.
