I was drafted to HMS Sultan on two occations, the first time I was "Buffers party" in other words site maintenance. It was near bonfire night and I was put in charge of building the bonfire. Not a bad job, we had three weeks to complete it. The basic design was to have three tunnels leading into the middle of the fire so we could put some sort of flammable materal in there on the night it was to be lit. We used an old archery target which was unravelled, as a fuse, and led this into the middle of the fire. To get the fire going we used a gallon of aviation fuel, which had a pretty good effect. The Captain had the honour of lighting the fire and nearly lost his eyebrows in the process as I have recently been reminded by Phil Drewball who was Buffer at the time.

I played a lot of hockey in the Navy and was in a very good team at Sultan. I managed to win a few medals for various ships/establishments

HMS Sultan mixed hockey team
WOMAA Bob Hedges on far left was the captain/manager of a very sucessful mixed team, we went the whole season without losing a game. We celebrated by having a meal in the "Cocked hat" pub, which turned out to be a food fight. Great for team moral.

HMS Sultan mixed team again only this time a year later.
I really enjoyed my hockey and was playing up to 4 times a week for
establishment/ship and United services 2nd team. It was a great social life
and some thing I really miss since leaving the navy.
